If you've always used card or paper roaches, glass can look more complicated than it is. You don't need to understand every variable before buying your first tip.

Match your first glass tip roughly to how you already roll. Then experiment.

What Size Glass Tip Do I Need?

These are rough starting points, not strict rules. Personal preference matters more than any category.

6–7mm — Slim & Familiar

Close to a slim traditional roach.

8–9mm — Everyday / Step-Up

A popular middle ground for a wide range of rolling styles.

10–11mm — More Substantial

A noticeably wider tip, well suited to those who already roll on the wider side.

12–13mm — Chunky / Session

A chunkier, more statement-style tip for those who prefer a more open draw.

14mm+ — Statement / Enthusiast

The larger end of the range, typically chosen by those who specifically want a wider piece.

Your normal roll matters more than somebody else's favourite size.

Diameter Isn't the Whole Story

Two tips can both be labelled 11mm and still feel noticeably different. Outside diameter is one measurement — but several other variables affect the experience:

Internal airflow design
Taper
Wall thickness
Weight
Mouthpiece shape
Glasswork

Length is separate from diameter: a standard and an Extendo tip at the same diameter will carry more glass, sit differently in a roll and feel different in balance. Shape matters too: a straight/cylinder tip and a tapered/cone tip can feel different even at similar stated sizes.

Glass Tip Weight

Glass is heavier and more rigid than card, and for first-time users this is often the biggest adjustment.

Heavier doesn't mean better. It simply means different — and it's worth factoring into your first buy.

If you normally backstrap (rolling with the paper inside-out), you might find it easier to roll normally/forward for your first few attempts while getting used to the extra glass weight. Once you're comfortable, use whichever rolling method you prefer.

How Does Glass Tip Airflow Work?

Different tips use different internal structures — multiple small holes, channels, vortex-style designs, divided bores, different tapers and openings. Some customers prefer an open draw, some prefer more resistance, others prefer something in between.

Outside diameter tells you how big the tip is. Internal design helps determine how it draws.

A higher number of channels or holes does not automatically mean better airflow. Your preference is what matters.

Handmade Glass vs Engineered Consistency

Handmade glass can have individual character — glasswork, colour work and small dimensional differences that make each piece its own.

More repeatable, engineered designs may appeal to those who prioritise consistency in dimensions or internal architecture, and want each tip to feel the same as the last.

Neither is automatically better.

How to Choose Your First Glass Tip

1. Look at the roach you already make

That is your starting point.

2. Choose a similar diameter

You do not need to start small just because you are new to glass.

3. Keep the other variables relatively simple

A more standard format gives you fewer new variables while you get used to glass.

4. Experiment afterwards

Try a different diameter, airflow design, shape or length.

That's how you find your glass.

What is the best glass-tip size?

There isn't one. Start close to how you already roll and experiment from there.

Does a larger tip automatically mean more airflow?

No. External diameter and internal design are different variables. A wider tip does not automatically draw more openly than a narrower one.

Are handmade glass tips better?

Not inherently. Handmade glass can offer individuality and craftsmanship that many customers value highly. Other designs may appeal because of repeatability and engineered internal structures. The right choice depends on what matters to you.

Why do two 11mm tips feel different?

Length, taper, weight, wall thickness and internal architecture can all vary between tips that share the same labelled diameter. Outside diameter is one measurement, not the full picture.

Why do glass tips vary in price?

Price can reflect glasswork complexity, handmade labour, artist involvement, internal design, colour work, collaborations, rarity or production scale. Price alone does not determine quality.
